For twenty years, getting found online meant ranking on Google's first page and hoping people clicked. That is changing fast. Increasingly, Google answers the question itself, at the top of the page, using AI, and many people never scroll further.
What changed
Google's AI Overviews put an AI-written summary above the usual results. AI Mode goes further: a conversational search where people ask long, detailed questions and get one combined answer with links. AI Mode began rolling out in India in June 2025, added Hindi in September 2025, and in October 2025 expanded to more Indian languages along with Search Live, which lets people search by talking and pointing their camera.
At the same time, people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants directly: "best physiotherapy clinic near me", "which CA firm handles GST for exporters", "good agency for Shopify stores".
What it does to clicks
Independent studies of thousands of search terms have found that when an AI Overview appears, fewer people click the top organic result, with some 2025 analyses reporting drops of well over a third. Google disputes the size of the effect and says the clicks it sends are higher quality. Both can be true: fewer casual visitors, and more people arriving who already know what they want.
For a business, the goal shifts. It is no longer only "rank and get clicked". It is "be the business the AI answer names and links to".
Be the source AI quotes
AI answers are assembled from pages that clearly and confidently answer a question. Vague homepages, pages that bury the offer, and sites that never say where they work or what they charge give the AI nothing to quote. Clear, specific, well-organised pages do.
Six things to do now
- Answer real questions on your site. Price ranges, timelines, who you serve, what is included. Use the words customers use, and add a short FAQ to key pages.
- Say the specifics plainly. Where you work, which industries, what makes you different. AI tools cannot recommend you for something your site never says.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and active. For local searches, it is still one of the strongest signals. See our Google Business Profile checklist.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, directories, press and partner websites all help AI tools trust that you are real and relevant.
- Use structured data. Behind-the-scenes markup that tells search engines your business name, services, prices and FAQs in a format they read easily.
- Measure enquiries, not just traffic. If visits fall but calls and WhatsApp messages hold or rise, AI search is sending you better-qualified people.
What not to do
- Do not publish dozens of thin, AI-written pages hoping to rank. They rarely get quoted and can drag down the rest of your site.
- Do not chase every new tool. Clear pages and a strong reputation work across all of them.
- Do not panic about traffic numbers alone. Watch the enquiries.
AI search rewards the business that explains itself most clearly.
