Most business owners who tell us their ads are not working are partly wrong. The ads are often doing their job: bringing people to look. What fails is what happens next. If you double the budget without fixing that, you double the loss.
Ads bring people. Something else loses them.
Think of an ad as the person standing outside a shop inviting people in. If the shop is confusing, the price is not explained, or nobody answers questions, it does not matter how many people walk through the door. Online, the "shop" is three things:
- The offer: what exactly you are selling, to whom, and why it is worth the price.
- The page people land on: does it answer their questions and ask them to act?
- The follow-up: what happens after someone enquires, adds to cart or messages you.
When sales are flat and ads are running, the problem is usually in one of these three. That is why we never start a client engagement with ads.
Five checks before you spend more
1. Can a stranger understand your offer in five seconds?
Open the page your ad points to and show it to someone who does not know your business. Ask them what you sell, who it is for and what to do next. If they hesitate on any of the three, fix the page before the budget.
2. Does the ad promise what the page delivers?
An ad about a discount that lands on a homepage with no mention of the discount loses people. The message, the picture and the offer should continue from ad to page without a break.
3. How fast do you reply?
For many service businesses, most enquiries arrive on WhatsApp or by phone. If a reply takes hours, the person has already messaged two competitors. Quick replies, a catalogue and saved answers in WhatsApp Business are often worth more than a bigger budget.
4. What happens to people who don't buy the first time?
Most people do not buy on the first visit. Without a follow-up path, such as a reminder, a useful message or a retargeting ad, every one of them is money already spent and walked away.
5. Are you measuring sales, or just clicks?
Clicks, likes and reach are easy to report and easy to feel good about. Count what pays the bills: enquiries, calls, WhatsApp messages, orders and walk-ins, and what each one cost you.
If the page or the follow-up loses people, more ad spend only makes the loss bigger.
The right order
- Make the offer clear and worth the price.
- Fix the page people land on.
- Set up the follow-up: replies, reminders, retargeting.
- Measure real enquiries and sales.
- Then increase the ad budget on what is working.
When more ads are the answer
Sometimes the business really is ready and simply not reaching enough people. You can tell because the page converts, follow-ups close, and each sale costs less than it earns. Then scaling ads is the right call, and it pays.
The only way to know which case you are in is to look before you spend. That is what our ₹8,000 business audit does: it studies your ads, website, social media and sales process, and tells you what to fix first.
